Double Stacks at 2007 WSOP

It was reported today at PokerNews.com, that the WSOP will be doubling the chip stacks for ALL 2007 events! It looks like they intend to add some more levels in some of the lower buy-in events, and attempt to put some more 'poker' into these events.

The initial response seems to be favorable, but I think it will be settled at the events this year. I dont see how more chips can't help but make the events last longer..... and maybe thats what they want also! More bang for the buck!

NBC Heads Up Championship

The NBC Heads Up Championship concluded with an unlikely winner, IMHO, in Paul Wasicka! Wasicka took home $500K for his efort. Chad Brown took second and $250K.

The final 4 included Shannon Elizabeth and Gavin Smith!

Shannon beat 2006 WSOP Wiz Kid Jeff Madsen, Barry Greenstein, and Humberto Brenes to get to the semi-finals!

Smith took down Johnny Chan, Phil Gordon and Andy Bloch to get there.

Brown took down Gabe Kaplin, Kristy Gazes and Smith to make the finals.

Wasica bested Joe Hachem, TJ Cloutier, Nam Lee, and Elizabeth, before beating Brown for the title!

Online Poker Tournament Turnouts...

A recent article in PokerNews posted some really amazing numbers that I had to pass on everyone here. That link is to the actual article in it's entirity.

What got me interested in the article in the first place were the numbers of players in these events, AND the prize pools awarded! Take a look at these numbers over thie past weekend:

PokerStars $500+30 event drew 2,768 players with a total pool of $1.3M

FullTiltPoker had 2,115 players in their $300K Guananteed event

Mansion had 684players in it's $110K guaranteed event

PartyPoker had 1,313 players in it's $200K Guaranteed event

Bodog had 1,909players in it's $200K event.

Those are HUGE numbers, especially when you consider that most of those touraments took place on Sunday and probably in the same time frames!

2007 WSOP Tournament Schedule

The 2007 World Series of Poker Tournament schedule was announced recently, and there are some interesting changes and additions.

I have put up a list of the events by day, and you can see it at POKER TOURNAMENT INFO on the right hand side of this page.

There are some 4 HORSE tournaments this year, which is a HUGE change from the past. That main one last year must have really gotten huge TV ratings, for them to add more. The events added are much less than the $50K enent, but that one is still on the schedule.

The main event looks like it it geared for a maximum of 9,000 players.... it just blows the mind!

2006 WSOP Player of the Year

This short news release was put out by Cardplayer.com Magazine regarding the WSOP player of the year race for 2006:

Jeff Madsen Is the 2006 WSOP Player of the Year
Youngest Bracelet Winner Ever Beat Out Phil Hellmuth
It’s official.

Despite recent confusion concerning the World Series of Poker’s Player of the Year race, Jeff Madsen is the clear winner with 1,467,852 points. He outraced Phil Hellmuth, who finished with 1,130,559 points.

Harrah’s Rory Shanahan, who is responsible for keeping the race’s statistics, confirmed the results to CardPlayer.com early this morning.

Madsen, a 21-year-old film student from California, won two WSOP bracelets ($5,000 No Limit short handed and $2,000 No Limit) and made another final table. He also became the youngest bracelet winner in WSOP history.

Hellmuth won his tenth bracelet this year and made multiple final tables, including a third-place finish in Wednesday’s $1,500 No-Limit event. This caused some confusion among the media at the Rio (some had Hellmuth ahead of Madsen), but Shanahan assured CardPlayer.com that Madsen is indeed the WSOP Player of the Year.

2006 WSOP Main Event Numbers

This information according to CardPlayer/PokerWire:

Unofficial Numbers: 8,778 Entrants
No Limit Hold'em Main Event
Jul 31, 2006 / 21:41:12 EDT
The total number of players hasn't been triple-checked and certified, but the early information released is 8,778 players. That would create a prizepool around $82.5 million, with first prize worth more than $10 million.

This represents 3,159 more players than last year's Main Event, which is the biggest year-to-year increase in history. If the new players were pulled out and put into a separate event, it would become the third-largest field in live tournament history.

The poker boom just keeps on growing ...

A side note to the 2006 Mirage Shootout

While I covered the main event of the 2006 Mirage shootout, there was other news of a more personal nature involving the tournament. A good sized group from my local Poker club went to the event to play in a number of the preliminary tournaments.

Two members of our club, Mark Hannawi and Bob Sands, placed in the top ten in two of those events, both no limit texax holdem poker. Both placed 9th!

Mark took 9th in a $1000 buy-in no limit texas holdem poker event.

Bob took 9th in a $1500 buy-in No limit texas holdem poker event.

Congrats on a great accomplishment to both!

2006 National Heads Up Champ Crowned

Ted Forrest won the 2nd Annual National Heads Up Poker Championship early this morning! Forrest is a well known poker pro to anyone familiar with the poker scene. He has a couple WSOP braclets, and is a fixture in some of the biggest cash games in Vegas.

Coming in 2nd AGAIN, is Chris "Jesus" Ferguson! I'm sure Ferguson is not happy being second again, but getting to that point two years in a row is quite a feat, considering the field of pros one must go through!

Forrest took down $500K for his first place finish, and Ferguson $250K for coming in second.

NBC will be airing 10 hours of this event starting April 16, so you can see how each got to the championship table!
